Element of beginnings and of the mind
The alchemical symbol for air is an upward-pointing triangle bisected by a horizontal line. The upward-pointing triangle represents the rising of the spirit, and the horizontal line represents the balance between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Air symbolizes thought, clarity of expression, and inspiration. Therefore it represents the mind, intellect, self-expression and the ability to think clearly and rationally. Air is also associated with the east, the direction of the rising sun and with Spring, which makes it a potent symbol of new beginnings.
The symbol for Air is most useful in rituals and spells related to communication, creativity, and problem-solving. It also promotes clarity of thought and connection with the divine. This is an element of communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and it is associated with the voice, speech and writing. Air is also the element of travel, both physical and spiritual. Therefore it is also associated with the wind, flight, and dreams. A magic circle begins in the East, and the first step is to acknowledge the element of air.
