The alchemical symbol for air is an upward-pointing triangle bisected by a horizontal line. The upward-pointing triangle represents the rising of the spirit, and the horizontal line represents the balance between the physical and spiritual worlds.

It is also associated with the east, the direction of the rising sun and with Spring, which makes it a potent symbol of new beginnings.

This is an element of communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and it is associated with the voice, speech and writing. Air is also the element of travel, both physical and spiritual. Therefore it is also associated with the wind, flight, and dreams. A magic circle begins in the East, and the first step is to acknowledge the element of air.

The associated colors are yellow and white. Wands and athames are the most traditional Wiccan symbols for air, especially on the altar. Feathers and incense are also common symbols for this element. Images of clouds, sky, wings and balloons all act as appropriate symbols. Air is associated with the direction East.




This symbol can be carved into a candle, written on paper for a ritual, or incorporated into a sigil. This is a powerful symbol, so be thoughtful in using in spellwork.
